(BOSTON – August 17, 2011) The second season of international theatre programming by ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage continues with pioneering multimedia artist Laurie Anderson, performing in the Boston premiere of Delusion, her personal meditation on life, language, memory and identity. Performances take place Sept. 27 – Oct. 2, 2011 at the Paramount Center Mainstage (559 Washington Street, in Boston’s Theatre District). Tickets, from $25 – $89, are on sale now at www.artsemerson.org or by phone at (617) 824-8400.
At the heart of Delusion is the belief that words and stories can create the world, as well as make it disappear. Anderson is a masterful storyteller whose groundbreaking integration of technology, violin, visuals and voice creates spellbinding tales. Conceived as a series of short mystery plays, Delusion jump-cuts between the everyday and the mythic, combining violin, electronic puppetry, music and visuals. With altered voices and imaginary guests, Tibetan temple horns and Arabic strings, Anderson brings Delusion to life employing her trademark electronically enhanced violin and a group of supporting musicians. It invokes both humor and terror, conjuring up elves, mysteries, ghost ships, and dead relatives to spin poetic stories and imagery into gold.
Even those who have had the chance to see Anderson in concert or on screen will be swept away by her full-scale live performance art. A stunning collage of visual imagery, electronic soundscape and spoken vignette are combined to form the poetic language that has become Laurie Anderson's trademark.
Delusion was commissioned by the Vancouver Winter Olympics (2010) and the Barbican, London. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
