In 1945, Han van Meegeren had to prove he did not sell a Vermeer painting to the Nazi party. He had to prove he forged it.
A true story of deception and justice after World War II in 11:11 Theatre Company’s production of The Master Forger.
Not only does The Master Forger by David Wiener tell Han van Meegeren’s true story using vibrant characters, it also reveals the secrets of the art of forgery. In the war-shattered 1945 Amsterdam, van Meegeren, an obscure art dealer, sells a Vermeer that ends up in the hands of Hermann Göring and is discovered after the war ends. Charged by the victorious Allies with treason for selling a cultural treasure to the Nazis, van Meegeren must support his claim that the painting was not a Vermeer but rather his own creation. Wiener’s script goes into fascinating detail as van Meegeren must attempt to recreate another forgery or face the gallows. A cast of memorable characters, including Göring himself, combined with Brian Tuttle’s intimate directing style makes The Master Forger a production not to be missed.
Art and history enthusiasts alike will love The Master Forger!
